Populated in the 1890´s, Grant Park is one of Atlanta´s oldest and most historic districts. Grant Park is known for its striking Victorian homes and cottages, beautiful brick walkways and lush green scenery. Craftsmen built many of the architecturally distinctive homes you see today. Grant Park today is a mixture of the old and new residents with people of all levels of education, age and racial backgrounds living in the same neighborhood. The park is today visited by more than a million visitors yearly. This distinguished neighborhood allows its residents to be close to the city but feel like they are a million miles away.
Grant Park was named after Colonel Lemuel P. Grant, who came to Georgia to aide in the construction of the Georgia Railroad. Colonel Grant is known as the "Father of Atlanta" for all his efforts and aid in the design and building of a system of defenses during the Civil War. Grant also donated 100 acres of land in 1883 which became Atlanta´s first large city park and remains to this day the oldest surviving city park in Atlanta.
Since Grant Park was at the center of the Civil War, residents and visitors can visit the various historical landmarks that help make Grant Park the distinctive neighborhood it is. Places such as Fort Walker, which helped resist the Union forces for more than six weeks, The Cyclorama, home of the world´s largest painting "The Battle of Atlanta", and the legendary Oakland Cemetery are just a few of the sites that residents are happy to call a part of their home.
Not only is Grant Park known for its history, it is also known for its family like environment and attitude. Grant Park has its own neighborhood associations, which brings together those who want to protect, promote and strengthen the neighborhood. Grant Park holds events for all ages year round. Become a part of the Garden Club or Education Committee to see just how dedicated its community is to the growth and well being of its neighborhood. Events such as Free Zoo Day and the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival offer an escape from the commotion of the city. With Grant Park´s diverse botanical gardens, historical landmarks and gorgeous scenic walkways, you wouldn´t want to live anywhere else.
