Decatur Sanitation Services

The Solid Waste and Street Cleaning Division, with 15 employees, collected and disposed of 4,243 tons of garbage, trash and furniture and 1,943 tons of yard trimmings from single-family residences, 5,708 tons of garbage and trash from apartment buildings, businesses and institutions during FY 02/03. Two street sweeping machines swept up 564 tons of leaves during the same period.

Recycling services are contracted out to a private recycling contractor that collected 2,169 tons of recyclables during FY 02/-03. Recyclables include newspapers, cans, magazines, catalogs, glass bottles, telephone books, plastic, junk mail, mixed office paper, corrugated cardboard and pasteboard.
